Data Transformation

Introduction

Upgrades of critical software often require data transformation.  When our first customer faced this problem, we built a special facility for them which is now part of the standard MANASYS Jazz product.  The customer reported: -

“In using Jazz, programs that take hours or days can be done in minutes, data mapping that takes a day or more to complete can be done in minutes”

1.    The process starts with Jazz-format definitions of the input and output data layout, often created with Import-from-COBOL.

2.    With these layouts, use dialog Data Conversion/Conversion_spreadsheet to create an Excel™ spreadsheet from a template.  Click dialog buttons to add the layouts of the input and output files, and [Set Mapping] to insert default mappings (transformations).

3.    The spreadsheet is checked and edited to ensure that it is correct.  This is standard Excel editing.

4.    Re-open the spreadsheet from Data/Conversion_Spreadsheet, and click [Process Spreadsheet].  Using the spreadsheet and the input and output file definitions MANASYS Jazz  creates COBOL and JCL, which will compile and run correctly to produce the output file that you want, and a brief control report.

This brief video, Data Mapping and Conversion, shows the process.  This Help Page gives detailed information about the Data Conversion feature.
